چکیده

The selection of the minimal number of observers that ensures the maximum visual coverage over an area represented by a digital elevation model (DEM) have great interest in many fields, e.g., telecommunications, environment planning, among others. However, this problem is complex and intractable when the number of points of the DEM is relatively high. This complexity is due to three issues: 1) the difficulty in determining the visibility of the terrain from one point, 2) the need to know the visibility at all points of the terrain and 3) the combinatorial complexity of the selection of observers. The recent progress in total-viewshed maps computation not only provides an efficient solution to the first two problems, but also opens other ways to new solutions that were unthinkable previously. This paper presents a new type of cartography, called the masked total viewshed map, and provides optimal solutions for both sequential and simultaneous observers location.

Tradeoffs when Multiple Observer Siting on Large Terrain Cells

This paper demonstrates a toolkit for multiple observer siting to maximize their joint viewshed, on high-resolution gridded terrains, up to 2402 × 2402, with the viewsheds’ radii of up to 1000. It shows that approximate (rather than exact) visibility indexes of observers are sufficient for siting multiple observers. It also shows that, when selecting potential observers, geographic dispersion i...

Multiple Observer Siting on Terrain with Intervisibility or Lo-res Data

We describe two current projects with our toolkit for siting multiple observers on terrain. (Both observers and targets are at some specified height above ground level. Observers can see targets, when not hidden by the terrain, out to a specified radius of interest.) Siting the observers so that they are intervisible, i.e., so that the visibility graph is a connected set, is the first project. ...

Siting Observers on Terrain

This paper presents an experimental study of a new algorithm that synthesizes separate programs, for fast viewshed, and for fast approximate visibility index determination, into a working testbed for siting multiple observers jointly to cover terrain from a full level-1 DEM, and to do it so quickly that multiple experiments are easily possible. Both the observer and target may be at a given fix...

Exact maximum coverage probabilities of confidence intervals with increasing bounds for Poisson distribution mean

‎A Poisson distribution is well used as a standard model for analyzing count data‎. ‎So the Poisson distribution parameter estimation is widely applied in practice‎. ‎Providing accurate confidence intervals for the discrete distribution parameters is very difficult‎. ‎So far‎, ‎many asymptotic confidence intervals for the mean of Poisson distribution is provided‎. ‎It is known that the coverag...

Distributed Sensor Fusion for Object Position Estimation by Multi-Robot Systems

We present a method for representing, communicating and fusing distributed, noisy and uncertain observations of an object by multiple robots. The approach relies on re-parameterization of the canonical twodimensional Gaussian distribution that corresponds more naturally to the observation space of a robot. The approach enables two or more observers to achieve greater effective sensor coverage o...
